All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary J Jayalalitha is finally convicted in the income tax case. The justice was delivered in the special court at Bangalore.
Jayalalitha is the general secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). This was the not only case she was facing. She had many other cases to her credit.
Here is the summary of cases she had on her head and some of them are still going on:
Colour TV Case: She received 85,000,000 as commission for purchasing colour televisions during 1995. In Tamilnadu it’s normal to distribute gifts to public after election. These tv sets were purchased for village community centers in Tamilnadu. Along with Jayalalitha seven others were convicted.
Tansi Land Case: Again she misused her powers to purchase land for her personal business. The loss to government was about 3.5 crores. The misuse happened in 1992.
Gift Case: Jayalalitha received a gift of 3 crores from foreign. CBI is still going on. She exempted the income tax, since tax was not payable on gifts received in foreign currency. However when Chidambaram became finance minister, he reopened the case and CBI investigation is still going on.
Pleasant Stay Hotel: She allowed building a seven star hotel in Kodaikanal against the rules.
Coal Import: Again in 1992 the coal was imported against the interest of state. The loss was 6.5 crores.
Grapes case: Jayalalitha claimed tax exemption on 60 lakhs income, she claimed to have earned from grapes farming. The farming as per her was done on land in Andhra Pradesh. She claimed exemption from 1987 to 1993. However the land was purchased only in 1991.
Disproportionate wealth: During her chief minister tenure she aquired more than 100 properties. A raid on her properties disclosed assets worth 66 crores. The current decision in Bangalore special court was for this case only.
She is convicted and is eligible for 7 years imprisonment.
At least 10 other such cases are going on against her. Really Public of Tamilandu should be ashamed of them to choose such a corrupted leader.
