Shivsena and Maharashtra Ekikarana Samiti are on one side and Kannada Rakshana Vedike etc. are on one side.

Issue is regarding border districts of Karnataka. Maharashtra claims that Belgaum belongs to them since Marathi speaking population is more and Karnataka claim Belgaum on historical and language basis.

If we see the partition of states, partition was on language basis. Karnataka for Kannadigas and Maharashtra for Marathi.

Why Belgaum issue is still alive even after more than 65 years of independence and more than 50 years of formation of both the states?

Before we understand the problem (Even i an not a right person to explain it in details), lets have a look at Karnataka (Mysore Princely state) during British time.

The place covered by blue(Madras) and Green (Maharashtra) is old Karnataka. However Kannadigas were spread over surrounding places.

The old Mysore was progressive and wealthy state. However present day north Karnataka was misruled by Nizams and British. Kannadigas felt a discomfort and wanted to unite with rest of the Karnataka. The most of the united Karnataka took place in Northern Karnataka.

Karnataka was re-organised after independence around 1956. The border parts in northern Karnataka had equal population of Kannada speakers and Marathi speakers but the reason was joined with Karnataka.

Because of this entire partition on language basis, not only Karnataka but many other states have this issue.

I think someone with deep knowledge on this subject can enlighten us.
