Advertisement is the method to reach consumers. I would like to talk about one big advertisement failure, which teach us something. Before we go to details, lets refresh the whole story.

Rediff was launched in around 96-97 and was ruling the internet market in India. And was on top in 1998 to 2006. In between a new site was launched by name

The site was financed by non other than media mogul Rupert Murdoch, considered advertising as marketing and spent on advertisin rather than marketing. 

And it gave a full page advertisement in Times to get some eyes. And this ad was on sunday morning newspaper, company thought everyone reading the paper will browse their site. But what happened was a nightmare for the company. No one actually browsed.

And this ad caused a hefty money to and finaly was cloased down.

Currently is redirecting to startv sites. ad in The Sunday Times

Would like to add the learning from this ad program

  1. Successful companies make successful brands and not opposite
  2. Dont target a market that can not afford your cost
  3. Dont market Non-Veg to vegetarians (I mean a website ad on Newspaper, in 2000 very few people had net connections and India was not an internet hub. Presently the situation has changed but the quote is for general marketing tips)
