Index is yet another powerful formulla and it is used in combination with MATCH function to overcome the limitation of vlookup function.

Index Function/formula is used find the value which is contained in a specified Cell.

We have to mention the Raw number and Column number in a given Table and Index function will give the value contained by their intersection Point.

=INDEX(array,row_num,column_num)

=INDEX(Table containing Data,row Number,column Number)

Example:

Suppose you want to find out the value contained Cell B14.

 Date as per Bank Date as per your Books Number 3/13/2012 12-03-2012 1 4/23/2012 23-04-2012 2 5/20/2012 19-05-2012 3 2/28/2012 26-02-2012 4 06/14/2012 13-06-2012 3

 =INDEX(A10:C15,5,2) 26-02-2012

you would have noticed that in above table cell B14 is in Row 5 and Column 2.

So we have mentioned the Row number and Column number as 5 and 2.

Exercise:

Find our the value contained in cell C13 using Index Function.
