"Congrats! Your order is confirmed.Customers who bought 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' also bought 'Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone'.
Lines like these are a common apperance on the online stores once you make a purchase, you are redirected to items of similar interests. In this case customer who bought the last Harry Potter book is directed towards the first Harry Potter book. Now you don't just turn away from the computer, you end up looking at articles of similar interest. This is exactly what technology can do to you if you are an author planning to write a book. Plan to write the second book even before you publish the first book. Shoppers looking for your second book will always end up buying your first one.
Need some proof. Here is the stat from Harry Potter Books (Source: Nielsen Bookscan (week 50, 1998 - week ending 11th December 2010))
|1||Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone||3,844,316|
|2||Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets||3,184,492|
|3||Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban||2,776,314|
|4||Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire||2,057,397|
|5||Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix||3,043,226|
|6||Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince||2,947,565|
|7||Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows||2,842,059|
The first book is the all time best seller in the series and successive books like Order 5 have sold more compared to the the last two books.
Does this trend cntinue with the movies; here is the list of Harry Potter films and their revenues
(SOURCE: UK FILM COUNCIL)
Box office gross
|1||Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone||66.1|
|2||Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets||54.78|
|3||Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban||46.08|
|4||Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire||49.2|
|5||Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix||49.43|
|6||Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince||50.72|
|7||Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part one||50.6|
Here we are yet again, the first one is grossing more than the rest.
So if you are planning to do a movie or write a book, think of the second one and even if your first one fails you will have more readership/views for the first one after your second one is released. On similar lines if the first book/movie is a hit, the web will have already created a platform and audience for you and your work through reviews and ratings and you just have to get the second one published to tap the advantage.
