Mahatma Gandhi is the most famous Indian. Gandhiji played a long role in freedom movement and was mass leader. And here have a look at people I feel were either mass leader or changed India in some way, post independence.

Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan: Jayaprakash Narayan (11/Feb/1902 -  08/Oct/1979), was a freedom fighter, and political leader. He lead the opposition to Indira Gandhi in seventies and gave call for peaceful Total

Loknayak Jayprakash NarayanRevolution. He is one of the biggest crowed puller India saw after independence; more than one lakh people attended his speech at Ramleela ground, Delhi. It was faith in his leadership that pulled the crowed. Huge crowed came despite the emergency and ban on Media. It was his revolution that corruption of Congress party was exposed and democracy in India became stronger. After his revolution India saw birth of many political parties and monopoly of congress was challenged. Janata Party was the major party that emerged after his revolution, letter Janata Party divided and many new parties were formed. Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) remains biggest political party, which was part of Janata Party earlier.

Balasaheb Thakare: The Tiger of Mumbai Bala Kesav Thakare (23-Jan-1926 to 17-nov-2012), remains the biggest ever crowed puller. He was the Head of political party, Shiv Sena. But people loved Balasaheb Thakare more than his party.

Balasaheb Thakare He started his career as a cartoonist, and left his job as cartoonist in 1960 and formed his own political weekly Marmik. He is believed to be reason for clearance of Mafia and underworld from Mumbai. Thakare had huge mass following and one appeal of his could make whole Mumbai shut down. He was never hypocrite and always talked straight forward. He was founder of Marathi daily Saamana. He was part of many controversies, one such controversy was His admiration for Hitler. Though he said that he does not support killing of Jews by Hitler, but he admires Hitler for his Leadership qualities.More than 25, 00,000 people gathered at his funeral in 2012, and whole Maharashtra was shut down.

Anna Hazare: The most famous Indian as of present period among youth is Kisan Baburao Hazare (Born 15 June 1937). Unlike JP Narayan and Balasaheb Thakare, he is a social activist. Anna Hazare served Indian Army from 1963 to 1975. After retiring from Army, he changed the fortune of his village and made his village Ralegan Siddhi, a model village.

Anna Hazare Some of the Notable works of Anna Hazare are Alcohol prohibition, Watershed development, Education, Removal of Untouchability, collective Marriages etc. He played important role in enactment of Right to Information Act.He was known in Maharashtra only but after his Anti-corruption movement, he became household name in India. Lakhs of people gathered to hear him during his hunger strikes in Delhi. He is the most notable social activist of current time and admired by many. His down to earth nature and straight forward behavior makes him a great leader.

Looking at current trends Narendra Modi looks a promising legend. Lets wait and see whether he makes a mark in the list of greatest Indians post independence.

As per me Jaiprakash Narayan was the ultimate. He threw the corrupt congress out of power and made India to realise that an alternate to Congress exist.
