Retail business is one of the oldest businesses. Every product has to pass through Retail stores to reach the ultimate consumers. The form of these retail stores may change; it may a big building or a beautiful website. Each street has at least one retail store in India. These are called Kirana shops in India. Here is the List of some of Biggest Kirana (Retail ) Stores of World:
WALMART The WALMART Company was incorporated on 31st October 1962; it was founded by Sam Walton in 1962. Walmart has headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas (USA).
Walmart is present in 15 countries and have 8,500 stores. It has around 55 names of its store. Though Walmart is world’s biggest retailer, it has seen some unsuccessful ventures in countries such as Germany and South Korea.
Walmart is world’s biggest Private employer; it employs around 20, 00,000 peoples. Walmart attracts customers for its strategy of offering the products at lowest price. Walmart had its slogan as "Low prices, always" till 2006.
If FDI is allowed in India, we are sure to see a dramatic change in Retail business in India. Walmart operates in India but at very small scale. Currently Walmart is operating in India through a venture with Bharti Enterprises (Airtel).
Carrefour The French retailer has its headquarters in Boulogne Billancourt, France. First store was opened in 1958, and company has progressed rapidly since then. In 1995 Carrefour merged with its big competitor Continent (Promodes). The Carrefour group was the first in Europe to open a large supermarket, a departmental store and a hypermarket under same roof.
Carrefour does business mainly in Argentina, Europe, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, China, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates; it also has stores in Asia and some parts of North Africa.
Carrefour operates in India but at small scale, However once FDI is allowed we may see it competing with biggest other retailers in world’s third biggest retail market.
TESCO Tesco is the biggest Britain’s biggest and world’s third biggest retailers. It operates in 14 countries across Europe, Asia and North America and is the grocery market leader in the UK, Thailand, the Republic of Ireland and Malaysia. The company was founded as a group of market stalls by Jack Cohen in 1919. Tesco got it name by combining the first initials of T.E. Stockwell (Tea seller to Jack Cohen) with last two alphabets of his last name.
Tesco operates around 2,975 stores. Tesco operates under different brands such as Tesco Extra, Tesco Metro, One Stop, Dobbies, Tesco Superstores, Tesco Express, Tesco Homeplus. Other than selling groceries, Tesco also provides services such as Financials services, Petrol station services, telecom services, Photo Shops, Tesco Tech Support, Technika, Film making, Record label, Video-on-demand, Gold Exchange, Tesco Tyres, and Your Beauty Salon.
Tesco does not have stores in India, but has BPO in Bangalore and operates under the name Tesco Hindustan.
METRO AG The German giant was established in 1964 by Otto Beisheim. It is headquartered in Dusseldorf, Germany. Metro is one of the most globalised retail and wholesale companies. Company operates in more than 30 countries and some of the major countries it operates are Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, China, Japan etc. Company has the plans to expand aggressively in Europe and Asia. Metro also operates in India and has a big megastore In Bangalore.
Kroger The giant American retail company was founded by Bernard Kroger in 1883. Bernard started the retail business with motto which read as “Be particular. Never sell anything you would not want yourself”. Kroger sales its own manufactured products, its manufacturing plants produces Dairy products, Bakery products, Meat products, and Grocery items. Company has its own brands such as Kroger Value, Banner Brands, and Private selection. Kroger has given employment to more than 3,40,000 peoples.
