I live a Laptop Lifestyle and I find it very exciting! But what do I actually do? How I spend a day of my life? Simple, I work as a freelance journalist—it’s a competitive field, yet accessible to everyone. Dedication, resilience, and knowledge of what editors really want are what you need to get started (oh…and don’t forget laptop with a net connection). I’ll tell you how you can succeed in this field, and how exhilarating this vocation can be for you!
Freelance Journalism helps you earn money online while sitting at home, sipping coffee, watching your favorite football team score crazy goals. No formal business suits—you can work in your underwear, and work according to your own schedule!
Do you have what it takes to be a freelance journalist? Your success depends on four factors—natural writing talent; learning the necessary skills; hard work, dedication and self-discipline; business sense and marketing skills. You need some of each but not necessarily in equal parts. A journalism degree from an accredited college—though not necessary—is not a bad thing to have.
So how to get started…? Before you really start to make the big bucks, you need to go through four phases.
Your venture starts with portfolio development where you acquire the skill and try to publish few articles without demanding a pay for it. It doesn’t matter which topic you’re writing about, and where they appear.
In the second phase, you try to get some articles published and demand payment, no matter how much you earn.
In the third phase, you aim to get published in as many different magazine and newspaper as possible, with your byline. Establish yourself as an expert in one or several subject and try to make a reputation in Editors’ mind. Endeavour to get recognized as a specialist writer so that your contribution gets valued.
In the final phase, you learn the marketing skills. Develop a business plan. Invest in basic utilities, and try to break into high profile markets demanding standard upfront rates. This marks the end of your learning campaign, and you’re ready to go freelance.
As a freelance journalist you get chance to meet exciting peoples, and do exciting things! I once a send a query letter to a magazine editor, asking whether she wants an article on what it is like to be the husband of a belly dancer… She replied with a yes. To write that feature, I went around finding some belly dancers and requested to interview their husbands. Some of them invited me on dinner where I took the interview, and even got to see some of their foxy dance moves! So exciting…isn’t it? This is just an example of how enjoyable this vocation can be.
You may be a nature lover, a fitness enthusiast, an adventure junkie—no matter what—you get chance to live your dreams, and earn simultaneously. Youget to spend more time with your family also.
So next time when you look at your laptop, think about how an exciting vocation freelance journalism can be... It’s inviting you for a better tomorrow—so don’t sit and speculate—go for it!
