NIRBHAYA---A POWER MISSILE TAKING INDIA TO NEW HEIGHTS
The launching of the first supersonic cruise missile Nirbhaya will go down in the pages of Indian defence as a golden one. Nirbhaya is one of the major landmark in the nation's missile development programme. This program is expected to fill the gap between the long range missile and supersonic missile developed by India in the comming years. There is a saying that "Success comes after many failures". It is very true in March 2013 when the missile failed to fullfill the expectations and veered off course before falling near Chandipur on sea. Nirbhaya is a low flying missile having the speed ahead of a normal commercial aircraft and designed by DRDO to evade being detected by the radars. It has the highest level of accuracy in whcih it can hit a building in a highly populated area with tremendous accuracy. The important fact is that it is indigeneously designed and manifactured in India. The fact that it is nuclear capable increased its profile by manifold compared to other missile produced by India.
The engineers and scientists of the DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization) have worked on it for years and this is the fruit of their labour. The specialised engine of the missile has been made at the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) in Bangalore. DRDO has not rised to the national expectation in many areas. However it has done well in many projects in the field of development of missile technology. The missile technology control regime (MTCR) prevents nations form assisting India in the process of development of Cruise and Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) having range of more than approx 300 kms. This is the major reason BRAHMO, a missile technology jointly developed by India and Russia had to be brouight down to 295 kms. Pakistan has developed Babur missile having the same caterogy like the BRAHMOS missile. Cruise missile is the technology soley owned by USA, RUSSIA and FRANCE.
The Nirbhaya will require a lot of fine tuning and research and development to match the international standards. It will take approx 4 years to make the missile as strong as the USS Tomahawk which can be launched from air sea and land. The ability of Nirbhaya to be launched from the submarine will be the icing on the cake. It will also filt into the Indian defense system which believes in Multitasking.
