Hockey is the national sports of India. Asian games started in the year 1958 and since it started, the victory of Indian Hockey Team in South Korea is only the third in the entire hockey history. Pakistan on the other side has won the Asian Games hockey eight number of times. We must try to revive the interest in the national game that has plunged to an all time low at the London Olympics just two years ago. The Indian victory in the tie breaker in the final against its neighbor has helped Indian cause a lot more. India will get a direct entry into the Rio Olympics and Champions Trophy to be played in Bhubaneswar from December 14 onwards. The coaching staff and the coaches must be retained for Rio Olympics.

India has done very well in the Inchon Asian Games compared to the other Asian Games. There were gold medals for India in the field of Squash, Boxing, Athletics, Kabaddi, Tennis, Archery, Shooting, Boxing and Wrestling. The medal tally which consisted of approx 58 medals including 11 gold, fell short of expectations. Narendra Modi has applauded the sports person for their yeoman service to the nation and even offered his mobile number for the growth and improvement of sports.

China, as expected has done lot of good work by topping the medals tally with approx 350 medals including 151 gold. Nations like North Korea, Thailand were ahead of India, which is a matter of concern. Sports bodies must be given independent and sports establishment must be given foreign assistance. India is still following the age old system of sports, and the need of the hour is the modernization of sports complexes and equipment in the country. Lack of adequate infrastructure and proper resources has led to the constant conflict between the sports bodies and the government on many issues.

The policies and procedures must be spelled out a year before the event actually comes into shape. The political responsibility for the sports in India lies with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, which is headed by a cabinet minister and managed by the national sports federations. The main aim of the sports ministry is to nurture and assist the youth in various sports disciplines. IOA has been established and it is set up to encourage the participation of the Indian team in Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, Asian Games, Afro Asian Games and the South Asian Games.

India has done good in many sports like winning the Olympics hockey gold for 8 times, winning the cricket world cup twice in 1983 and 2011, winning hockey world cup in 1975, winning the world cup Kabaddi, winning Asia Cup volleyball tournament, winning T20 world cup, Boxing gold, world cup chess is won by us, thanks to the hard work of Vishwanathan Anand.

On November 16, 2014 was the Super Sunday for the Indian sports in particular because Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth won singles at China Open Super Series Badminton tournament. World no 16 stunned the world when he defeated China’s Lin Dan to win the China Open.  Delhi golfer Rashid Khan wins the Changmai Golf tournament. Hence we can proudly say that an Indian sport is on the rise in all the sporting disciplines. Remember it always easy to reach the top, but very difficult to maintain the topmost position.
