Documents on Stamp paper are legal?

Often we believe that anything written on stamp paper is a valid legal document. Is it really so?

As far as i think putting words on stamp paper is not enough, one need to register the document with sub-registrar.

What you think of it? Most of the time we see Partnership Deeds, Rent agreements etc. on a stamp paper but not registered by Sub-Registrar.

Is it necessary to register these documents to claim them valid in courts?

Or

Unregistered documents are valid documents in eye of courts?

To keep a short answer to this question . Please refer Indian Contract Act, 1872. The answer lies therein.

To constitute any enforceability, documents can be classified in to Registrable and non registrable documents. Similar is in case you buy a stamp paper, the stamp paper are availible which are used for Judicial purposes and stamp papers availible for non judicial purposes.

Registration of documents are not a pre condition for enforceability in court of laws.

Additionally pls. refer The Registration Act, 1908 , which specifies mandatorily registrable documents, Optionally registrable documents and those documents which are out of purview of registration.
